How to measure for a bespoke suit or shirt

If you cannot get to Karon Beach, you can send us your own measurements. Take them over a thin shirt, stand naturally, and let the tape sit snug but never tight.

Before you start

  • Use a soft tailor's tape, not a builder's tape or a piece of string.
  • Ask someone to help with the back, shoulder and sleeve measurements.
  • Wear the shoes and shirt you would normally wear with the garment.
  • Record everything in centimetres or inches — just tell us which.

Jacket & blazer

Tailor measuring a jacket chest and shoulder with a tape measure
Chest
Around the fullest part of the chest, tape level, arms relaxed at your sides.
Waist
Around the natural waist just above the hip bone — do not pull the tape tight.
Seat
Around the fullest part of the hips with pockets emptied.
Shoulder
From the seam point of one shoulder across the back to the other.
Sleeve
From the shoulder point over a slightly bent elbow to the wrist bone.
Jacket length
From the base of the collar down to where you want the hem to finish.

Trousers

Tailor measuring trouser waist and inseam with a tape measure
Waist
Measure around your natural waistline where the trousers will sit, not where your belt feels tightest.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat with pockets emptied.
Crotch
Measure from the front waistband, down between the legs, and up to the back waistband.
Thighs
Measure around the widest part of one thigh, keeping the tape horizontal.
Knees
Measure around the knee at the centre of the kneecap, with the leg relaxed.
Cuffs
Measure around the ankle where you want the trouser hem to finish.
Outseam length
From the waistband down the outside of the leg to the desired hem.
Inseam
From the crotch seam down the inside leg to the top of the shoe.

Shirt

Tailor measuring a shirt sleeve and collar with a tape measure
Chest
Around the fullest part of the chest, tape level, arms relaxed at your sides — measured over a thin shirt.
Waist
Around the natural waist, over a thin shirt only, with the tape snug but not tight.
Hips
Around the fullest part of the hips so the shirt hem drapes cleanly over the trousers.
Shoulders
Straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
Sleeves
From the shoulder point over a slightly bent elbow to the wrist bone.
Biceps
Around the fullest part of the upper arm with the arm relaxed.
Wrist
Around the wrist bone, plus a little room for a watch if you wear one.
Shirt length
From the base of the collar at the back, down to where you want the shirt hem to end.
